How do I know if the ice is safe for fishing?

Place a tape measure in the hole, hook the other end of the tape measure onto the edge of the ice, and measure it accordingly. If your reading is at least four inches, proceed with caution. Stay off of any ice that is 3 inches or less thick. Remember that a minimum of 4 inches of clear, solid ice is a requirement to support an average person’s weight. Ice that is more than five inches thick will likely hold a snowmobile.
