Heikki comes to Diamond and Diamond after spending over eight years working for one of Canada’s top ten litigation boutique firms for plaintiffs. Called to the Bar of Ontario in 2003, he has specialized in plaintiff side civil litigation since the beginning of his career. Heikki has been the lead lawyer on a number of civil jury and non-jury trials in the Province of Ontario.
His practice is focused on plaintiff personal injury actions for catastrophically impaired people with an emphasis and interest in cases involving brain injuries, severe orthopaedic injuries, aviation disasters, contractual denial of insurance benefits, and cases involving abused elderly people.
He has a working relationship with the great lawyers at the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE) in Toronto, and have been a vigorous and outspoken protector of the rights of elderly people in institutional settings. He has successfully prosecuted claims for elderly victims of abuse against institutions and their staff. Obtaining justice for these vulnerable people, and punishing perpetrators of abuse has become one of Heikki’s most important missions.
He frequently appears in Superior Court on complex motions, administrative proceedings, jury and non-jury trials, and appeals. In 2012, he worked with colleagues at his former office to obtain a $15,300,000 settlement, that we understand to be one of the highest ever no-fault benefits settlements in Ontario history*. The settlement was the result of a difficult and complex motion in the Superior Court of Justice, and was upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Heikki has also appeared as counsel in criminal matters before the Ontario Court of Justice.
